Research shows

Eye colors are determined by genes.

It has been determined by scientists that almost any variation of parent-child genes can create a specific color combination. (See the eye colors chart provided). Neither the mother nor the father can take complete responsibility for the eye color.

The iris gets its color from these three main elements the epithelium, iris stroma, and the eumelanin.

The amount of melanin, and the density of the cells within the iris stroma affects the amount of light absorption in the underlying layers of the epithelium. Thus creating the human eye-color variations.

This Chart page holds the following words - we have provided their definitions for your convenience:

  • Epithelium - A primary body tissue which sits on top of connective tissue. It has two layers which is separated by membrane. It's function is secretion, protection, detection of sensation, and absorption.

  • Eumelanin - Found in the following hair colors, brown, black, yellow, and grey. It is also found in skin. We find Black eumelanin primarily in non-Europeans but including aged Europeans. Brown eumelanin is found in most young Europeans. Grey hair is caused by having a small amount of black eumelanin and no other pigments. Yellow (blond) hair is caused by having a small amount of brown eumelanin and no other pigments.

  • Iris - The Iris represents the eye color. The center of the Iris known as the pupil contracts or expands allowing light to enter. The Iris controls the diameter of eye in direct unison with pupil and the amount of light allowed in. The size of pupil determines the amount of light.

  • Iris Stroma - Consists of fibers, cells, vessels, and nerves.

  • Melanin - stops the rapid development of a tan caused by the sun. It absorbs harmful UV radiation which prevents indirect DNA damage.

  • Pigment - Melanin is a pigment, and responsible for color.
